Sneak Peak of our Family Portraits

The family and I drove to River Market in downtown KC the other day for a mini photo shoot session (one hour was plenty of time!) with photographer Sarah Dickerson.  We haven't had our pictures taken as a family of 4 yet so it was time to update the frames in our house and I also wanted 1 year photos of Alec.  Sarah put up a handful of sneak peek pictures on her blog and I thought I'd share some of them here too.  I thought they turned out great and I'm really looking forward to seeing the rest of them.  How will I choose!??!

We didn't bring these balloons with us, a stranger asked if we wanted them.  Later I tied them to a bench near our things and next thing we know, a woman walked off with them!

Fire Station Visit

We joined our Mom's group this morning and went to a Fire Station for a tour. We saw where the firefighters cook, eat, sleep, workout and hang out as well as check out all their awesome gear.  Ethan was on his best behavior (despite the one time he took off running toward the street!) and even answered a few of the questions correctly.  When the firefighter was showing us all the tools they used to fight fires Ethan piped up and shouted, "MY DAD HAS THOSE TOOLS IN OUR GARAGE!!!!".  He wasn't bashful one bit.

Apparently we have one of those tools in our garage.

Alec chilled in the stroller the entire time, which was a relief to me, because really, this guy is heav-y!

Ethan could have sat there and chatted with this fireman for hours.

Ethan wouldn't get in the picture with us, which was the exact moment he took off toward the street!

Great-grandma's Red Chair

Taken in Alec's Great Grandma's yard.
My mom, the boys and I went to Iowa last week for a visit with my family.  I hadn't taken the kids up there before now (it's a 6 hour drive, need I say more?) but was happy we went.  The boys met loads of relatives and enjoyed hanging out with each and every one of them.

We were there for 3 nights total, which was just the right amount of time.  We stayed at my step-dad's mom's house (Great Grandma Jo) since she has lots of room.  She raised 11 kids in that house so there were definitely enough bedrooms for all of us to have our own.  Ethan and I shared the room with 2 beds in it, which worked out well when he fell out of the bed in the middle of the night!

I didn't take a lot of pictures while we were there, but wished I would have now.  We visited with 2 Great Grandma's, 1 Grandpa, loads of Great Aunts and Uncles, 1 Great Great Aunt, 2 Aunts and Uncles, 1 second cousin, 1 third cousin, 4 first cousins and many more! Ethan went nearly 4 days without his daily nap, and actually managed to act like himself most of the time despite being exhausted and going to bed late a couple nights. Alec was a trooper and kept up with his regular routine no matter where I plopped down his pack-n-play.  All in all, these guys are pretty good travelers (it also helped that my mom brought 12 DVD's and a million toys)!

The family we have in Iowa all seem to live out on farms so there were no quick shopping trips or sight-seeing or nice restaurants.  Just a lot of visiting and catching up (and tons of food from the grandma's!), which was all very relaxing, but towards the end I know all of us were looking forward to our own beds and our regular routine.

Puddle Jumper

Today was a rainy and gloomy day, but after the rain clouds moved east we went outside for a puddle hunt.  We only found one good one though, but it was plenty.  Ethan could have played in it for a very long time, but it was pretty much right in the middle of the road and I'd rather not get into the habit of playing in the street.

Up until today, Alec hasn't really shown any interest in being mobile other than crawling.  But this afternoon, while his brother was napping, I convinced him to give the walker another try. I think he did pretty good for his first time.  Go, Alec, go!

Pool Party!

The boys' cousins were in town visiting their Nana this past weekend and it was perfect weather for the pool.  The kids had so much fun together, it was great watching them play.  They laughed, splashed, smiled and joked the entire time.

Ethan was able to swim on his own *with a puddle jumper*, which is an improvement over last summer.  He can doggy paddle slowly and he absolutely loves jumping off the side into the water, but feels safest if Nick is there just in case.  This was Alec's first time in a big pool and he did great.  We're planning on doing swim lessons for both of them this year, so we'll see how that goes.

Time has passed since this picture was taken and he still has the indention marks of his goggles.

This guy had his 1 year checkup and he's a big boy.  He's in the 97th% for height and 70th% for weight. Chubba chubba!

Special Delivery!

Ethan asked me to ship him to Grandma's house, so we tried.  He stayed out there to wait for the UPS man but he never showed and Ethan started to get hungry. But don't worry Grandma, we'll try it again soon!

He loves his music

Alec doesn't sit still very often (one exception is when there is food in front of him) so I was surprised when he sat through 3 entire songs with headphones on.  He likes to boogie to music and he jiggled his little shoulders and bopped his head while taking it all in.  I couldn't stop smiling at him, he looked so grown up!

Here is a throwback picture of Ethan doing the same thing, around the same age as Alec:

We had a small party for Alec this past Sunday, even though his actual birthday wasn't until today.  My parents were going to be in the area that weekend, so it worked out great.  As I was pulling up these pictures I noticed I didn't take one picture of the boys WITH any of their grandparents.  Sorry!

Step away from my cake!
He's not bashful.

Ethan enjoyed shoveling cake into his mouth too!
We all enjoyed a great BBQ (thanks, dear!), cake and homemade ice cream (thanks Papa!) and then headed inside for Alec to open his great gifts.

Both kids are screaming to be let down but Nick wasn't going to let that ruin the picture!

Since we had Alec's party on Sunday, we didn't have big plans for his birthday today. Luckily, we can still get away with that at this age. We did have a nice and relaxing day though, and sang him Happy Birthday about 73 times.  Here are some pictures from today:
