Jeep

Nick has wanted an old, rugged jeep for a long time and he thought now was the time to buy one.  His dad and ex-step-dad were both jeep lovers so it was only a matter of time before Nick had one of his own I suppose.  As luck would have it, he was able to buy one that used to belong to his ex-step-dad.  It's very rough around the edges and is lacking in anything remotely luxury, however, from what I'm learning, it's got some mad rock climbing skills. Ethan was especially excited to ride in it so we bought a couple car seats that would actually fit so they could both enjoy the wind in their hair (no rock climbing for these guys!).

Nick and a friend drove out to Colorado to pick up the jeep, and were able to stay a couple days and drive some trails.  The pictures he sent me were gorgeous, I'm still a little bitter I didn't get to go.  The pictures below show the gorgeous Colorado background and a few happy boys going for a ride.

Sons

"A mother's love for her child is like nothing else in the world.  It knows no law, no pity, it dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path."
-Agatha Christie

Somewhere inside those boys is my heart.

It was a circus

Literally.
Ethan and I had a mom/son date last weekend, we went to the Barnum & Bailey circus.  Ethan enjoyed it, but was ready to leave about 3/4th of the way into it, which worked out perfectly to avoid the people and traffic.

$12 Cotton Candy!

The elephants looked terribly sad, I couldn't help but wonder if they really belonged there.

We had a lot of fun together, he was extremely well behaved the entire time and was fast asleep after we hit the road back home.  I think we might go back next year and maybe we can bring little brother, Alec!

Lessons from his 15 month checkup

I took Alec to his 15 month checkup this morning and here is what we learned:

He weighs 24.8lbs (55th percentile)

He is 33 1/2 inches tall (97th percentile....WHAT?!?)

He does NOT like to sit, lay, crawl or even touch the exam table.

He is strong and can escape 2 people holding him down for shots.

His lungs work fine, the doctor from across the building told me so.

He does NOT like waiting in the exam room, at all.

He does like to show his doctor where the door is, pointing at it so she'll leave.

He does NOT like stickers or band-aids.

He does like mommy's hugs, a lot.

He gets over things quickly, thank God!

Don't let this sweet pose fool you, he's not a patient patient.

Official First Day of Preschool

The official first day of preschool sort of lost its luster after having "Meet and Greet Day" and "Orientation Day" the week before school started, but it was still an exciting morning for us.  He was very ready to go and told me he was going to learn all his letters and tell everyone about the human body (he's still into all things bones and blood).  Since he only goes 2 days a week for a couple hours each day, it doesn't really feel like "school" so I didn't start crying as I kissed and hugged him goodbye, instead I was excited for him to socialize and hang out in a different setting for a change.

School pictures and a pumpkin patch visit are coming up on the preschool calendar!  Yea!

Labor Day Weekend

We've been blessed with GORGEOUS weather (upper 70's!!) these past 2 days and so we found a few outdoor things to this Labor Day weekend.  My mom and Jim were driving though KC on their way home from visiting my step-sister and her family (Hi Heather, Mike and Myrah!) so we drove to a small lake just a few miles from our house and had a picnic, skipped rocks and played with them.  And then today we visited the local Arboretum just 10 minutes from our house.  I brought my camera and snapped a few pictures, but didn't quite capture the beauty of the place.  Very peaceful, lots of trails and of course, a lot of gorgeous flowers and plants.  Definitely a place to visit if you have time!

Kiss

The boys are affectionate, but generally don't give each other kisses too often.  Mainly because Alec doesn't sit still long enough.  So this was a rare occasion when they both puckered up.  My camera has a second or two delay before snapping the photo so each time they kissed, the camera flashed right afterward so there were many failed attempts at getting a good shot.

Attempt 1:

 Attempt 2:

Attempt 3:

Attempt 4: Ethan grabbed Alec's cheeks and pulled him close.

Ethan went for the bear hug instead:

Ended up on the floor:

Recovering...

And back to the kissing, I finally timed it just right!

One more.

Can't wait until they're much older to show them these pictures!

Four Years

In some ways it does feel like 4 years, and in other ways it just doesn't seem possible. But indeed, we are celebrating our 4th wedding anniversary today.

Nick and I met nearly 10 years ago while we both worked for Walgreen's, we dated for a long time before jetting off to Hawaii with our close family members to tie the knot.  Our wedding, such a small affair, is by far one of the best memories of my life (right up there with our sons' births, of course).  It was stress-free and casual, and more beautiful than I can even remember (the wedding, NOT their births).  There were a total of 10 of us and everyone got to enjoy a gorgeous vacation in Maui doing things together, or going it alone.  It was lovely and I wished I were there now.

I desperately want to go back to visit, but adding two small kids to the mix makes it a lot more complicated, however, I'm crossing my fingers that there will be 2 plane tickets in my anniversary card in the year 2017 for our ten year anniversary.  Ugh, that sounds like a million years away.

Nick surprised me with a beautiful bouquet of red roses, a nice card and a gift certificate to a spa.  Those gift certificates are like gold to me.  Seriously.  An hour of massages or facials or manicures is the best medicine for any stay-at-home mom.  And to top it off, he asked his mom to watch the boys tonight while we enjoyed dinner at The Melting Pot.  We stuffed ourselves silly with their four course dinner for two and then called it a night.

I showed Ethan some of our wedding pictures recently and he was full of questions. "You're going to have a marry wedding?" ""Where you a princess?" "Was I a big boy when you was married?" "Me and Alec were in your belly when you was married?"  It was terribly hard to get him to understand that he and Alec didn't exist when we were married, I told him he lived in God's heart and then in my belly later on. He let it sink in but still had a very confused look on his face.  Later I asked if he'd like to get married when he got big and his exact words were, "Yep, and when I'm big I'm gonna get married.  I wanna married YOU, Mama!"  Awwww!!  This kid knows how to butter me up!

Happy Birthday Grandma!

Today was is my mom's 50th birthday (which only makes me 25, sweet!).  She's a super grandma and doesn't miss a chance to drive up and see her grandsons, who obviously adore her as well.  She's rocked plenty a baby in her time, she's the 3rd oldest of EIGHT so she's well versed in childcare and has definitely helped me out when things got (get!) crazy.  Thanks Mom.

Happy Birthday!

Alec meeting Grandma for the first time.
